5 Christmas songs for the holidays:
1. Father Christmas – The Kinks
My favorite Christmas song. About as far from your traditional Christmas music as you can get. It came on one of the classic rock stations the other day. I turned about all the way up and sang along until my throat was sore. And it’s been playing on my iTunes as much as humanly possible. I basically spend the rest of the year waiting for December 1st to start playing it on repeat.
2. Christmas – The Who
Off of the Tommy album, it ‘s really rooted in the Tommy story (it even has a foreshadowing line about pinball). If we could all just pretend like the movie didn’t happen (I know people who love this movie, but come on, it’s disturbing, get over it), then the Tommy story more about social and spiritual struggles than religious ones, and the song comes off as a taunt than a Christmas carol, but still manages to sound like a rock song. Love my Who boys.
3. The Chanukah Song – Adam Sandler
It’s silly, yes, but it’s massively fun as well. And a bit educational. I knew that the entertainment industry was heavily populated by Jews, but I didn’t realize who some of them were. And there a certain glee he gets from singing the song (Adam Sandler is one of a few comedians who doesn’t mind laughing at his own jokes).
4. Christmas at Ground Zero – “Weird Al” Yankovic
5. Carol of the Bells – Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Yes, put electric guitars in all the Christmas songs. I like Carol of the Bells anyway. That’s some dark sounding shit, but the TSO also managed to make it into a rock song. That’s excellent. Also, their song Wizards in Winter is pretty cool.
