I’m So Depressed (How to Survive Post Con Depression)

“I’m so depressed.”

This past weekend the wonderful Gallifrey One convention for Doctor Who took place. It was three days of Whovian heaven, complete with cast and crew members and a plethora of fans. An entire weekend of panels, interviews, cosplay, ribbons, screenings, commentaries, signings, photo ops, merchandise, and merriment.

For a lot of people the annual convention is like coming home. So when the con ends and the attendants return to reality and their actual homes, there’s often a feeling of loss and emptiness.

This phenomenon isn’t restricted to the Doctor Who fans. Most people after returning from a convention are strongly affected by Post Con Depression (PCD). It is a thing. And while I am not outside the affected population, there are some things that can be done to better cope.

1. Take the Next Day Off

If you’re a full time employee or student, it may be wise to take the next day off. Being mopey at home is better than moping about at work. You won’t want to do much other than watch shows/movies or read books/comics relating to your con. That’s the headspace you’re in. Are you really going to be of much use the day after? You also don’t want to have to worry about turning in early the last night of the convention. Also, you will be exhausted. Sleep in. Sometimes going in the next day is unavoidable, but if it’s possible, I’d definitely suggest it.


2. Talk About It

The glee of the con can be sparked when you regain friends and family (or anyone who will sit still long enough or those that you chase down the street while shouting memoirs at them) with the adventures of the weekend. If you are forced to go to work/class the next day, you may be able to corner someone there and regale them with an exciting tale or two. This also extends to writing about it (perhaps in a blog).

3. Marathon

Whatever you con was for, focus on that for the day. As soon as I got home, I quickly constructed a blanket fort, got a drink and some snacks, turned off all the lights, and climbed inside with my laptop. My cosplay over the weaken had been the Troughton Doctor, so I started watching some Classic reconstructions and did a lot of sighing. The next morning (after sleeping in) I woke up and repeated the process. I highly suggest some variation of this. Lather, rinse, repeat.

4. Play with Your New Stuff

If you hit the dealer’s room and came home with any swag, break it out right away, packaging off, books (at least) partially read, episodes (at least) partially watched, listen to CD’s, get your sonic screwdrivers soniced, magnets on fridges, keychains on keys, bumper sticker on cars. That bit of stuff is part of the con that you’re carrying around with you now. Remember it often and fondly. And use it to remind yourself to register when next year’s tickets go on sale.

5. Listen to Some Podcasts/Read Some Blogs

If you know of any podcasts or blogs covering the con, then check them out the next day (or over the course of the week) for recaps. You get the connection of other people dealing with similar feelings and may get to hear about what was happening in other rooms that you were unable to visit. There are LOTS of podcasts and blogs that cover conventions. Shop around a bit and you’re likely to find one you enjoy.

6. Gear Up for Next Year
